So this is my first review. This is a pretty old model from 2004: The master grade wing gundam zero. So how does it compare to the more latest releases? Is it outdated?
Looks:
It looks fantastic even for an old kit, especially after panel lining it. The proportions are great, the length of the arms and legs look natural even for a Katoki kit, which are notorious for having unusually long legs. But of course, we all know what makes this kit stand out from the rest
Yep. Those wings. There's really nothing much to say about those wings. The pictures pretty much shows it. It's pretty well articulated, perhaps even more than the arms.
And those things open up
Although the highlight of the kit happens to somewhat be it's weakness as well
It would seem as if the pegs supporting the wings might break anytime, as seen by the stress marks shown.
Articulation
The articulation in the Wing Zero is pretty much standard master grade fare with at the very least decent articulation although it loses out compared to the newer kits due to having only a partial body frame.
Wing Zero crouches unnaturally as he tries to communicate with the relatively incomplete Qan[t]
Weapons
Zero has like only 4 weapons in total. 2 beam sabers and 2 buster rifles. Pretty darn accurate to the movie, that's for sure. And like in the movie, he doesn't have anywhere to keep his buster rifles. They just appeared out of nowhere.
And just to confirm suspicions. Yes, Zero can barely hold his weapons. But of course, it doesn't make sense to even release this kit if it's possible to make him hold his weapons. It is possible, but it takes a bit of patience and time. Basically for both the buster rifle and the saber, you have to position the thumb like this:
So yeah it works.
To combine the rifles to recreate the iconic scene in the Endless Waltz movie , simply remove both tabs from the sides of the guns and keep the trigger on one of the guns and it's done
Pros:
-Looks fantastic
-The angelic wings definitely succeed in making Zero stand out
-A stand that actually works
-Good amount of articulation
- Extra hands for more customization
-Good proportions
Cons:
-The faceplate moves. I kid you not
-Pegs on the backpack is poorly designed
-Takes effort to allow him to carry his weapons
-The feathers on the wing comes off easily
Conclusion
This kit is amazing even for modern standards. While it seemed like there was lots of cons, most of them are nitpicking and like I said before, it's not impossible to pose the Zero with it's weapons. And after which it begs the question: Does it need a 2.0? My answer is not really. While a 2.0 is certainly a pleasant surprise, there are many other kits such as the GP01 units which require an update and the Zero is still capable of standing next to it's newer units without looking outdated. Is it recommended? Definitely especially if you are a fan of the design.
Final Shot

"Roger that"
